Liverpool were the first to break the record at around 5:45pm when they announced that they had agreed a fee of £35million with Newcastle United for striker Andy Carroll. This then enabled the Merseyside club to accept the £50million bid Chelsea had offered for Fernando Torres, after he had handed in a transfer request at the weekend.
I still can’t believe that Liverpool have paid so much for a striker who’s only played half a season in the Premiership and has yet to really prove himself. Whereas I’m not surprised Chelsea were willing to pay £50million for a Torres because he’s a world class player who looked like he didn’t really want to be at Liverpool anymore.
I just hope he doesn’t help Chelsea stop United from winning the title!
I’m also concerned to see Man City in second spot. However it’s early days and things can change again and again over the course of the season. I think that if Chelsea get a few injuries (OK, Fat Frank has been out for a few weeks) they will struggle against tougher opposition on the road. Especially if Drogba or Anelka are out for a period of time. Next May I reckon United will just pip Chelsea and get revenge for last season. Especially as Chelsea are the only team which have started with a bang and not really suffered a dip in form yet, largely due to their inferior opponents to date.
Oh, and wouldn’t it be nice if Liverpool got relegated too.
Come the end of the season I’m predicting the top 4 to look like this:
Man United
Chelsea
Arsenal
Man City
]]>Rafa was then forced to take of Torres for precautionary reasons because of his knee. Liverpool played on but never really looked to take full control of the game.
Reading had a few chances but also didn’t look like they were going to take the game. Another blow came for Liverpool at half time as Gerrard who had scored the goal had to be substituted again at the time for precautionary reasons.
In the 92nd minute of the game Reading scored to make it 1-1 and send the game into extra time. 5 minutes into extra time and it was Reading again who took the chances and slotted the ball past Liverpool’s second choice keeper.
This defeat will only put more pressure on Rafa as his team this year have now been dumped out of the FA cup the League cup and the Champions league. They are 12 points behind Chelsea which in today’s game is a near impossible points difference to recoup but not impossible.
The only thing Liverpool have to fight for now is pride in the premier league and the Europa League but with the type of performance they are turning out at the moment i wouldn’t count on that being an easy ride no matter who they end up playing.
